The heat wave continues in the east of Austria; in the west, it is ending – but it does not leave without new records.
In Vienna, an incredible 36 degrees were measured on Friday. Because of the sultry weather, the perceived temperature is even higher. Also, the rest of the weekend continues with temperatures beyond 30 degrees; only on Monday is it expected to cool down.
In the west of Austria, for example, in Innsbruck, the heat wave ends on Saturday. But even on Friday, values of 32 degrees were still reported here. The last time the thermometer didn’t have a triple ahead during the day was some time ago here; with Friday, it’s exactly 15 days.
So, history was made in Innsbruck this year. Fifteen days in a row with 30 degrees or more – “That’s never happened here before,” UBIMET weather experts said on Twitter. The old record dates back to the summer of 2018, with 14 days of uninterrupted heat.
The heat wave ends in many places with a real bang. After severe thunderstorms and warning level purple in Vorarlberg, Salzburg, and Upper Austria from night to Friday, vital thunderstorm cells formed again over the mountains on Saturday, which subsequently moved towards the east.
